Ellen's photographs have been described as being "a curious blend of documentation and psychology of the Dutch landscape." Read more about her work here.

Ellen Sandbeck, author of three books on non-toxic living, just came out with a new book called Organic Housekeeping.

She extols the virtues of stuff like baking soda and white vinegar which work really well and save the environment too.

I've already tried some of these methods and they do work.
They'll save you money, too.

Well, actually it's Helen AND Ellen.

They're twin sisters (Helen Ashe and Ellen Turner) from Knoxville, Tennessee, who started The Love Kitchen twenty years ago to help feed the homeless in their hometown.

Found these friends, also namedHelen and Ellen who were the first women to win the Gandhi International Peace Award in November 2004.

I looked for some more pairings, but strangely only found a Brazilian site that had two bikini-clad gals with those names.
Think we'll skip that one, ok?

When I saw the headline for this opinion piece, I thought for a moment, there really was an All-Ellen Conference. It's about Liberian Presidential Candidate Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf who seems to be the main focus of this conference, which others had hoped would be more of a politically unifying experience.

Over in England, there is nothing like a dame, especially when it's Dame Ellen.
Ellen MacArthurwas recently given the title of Dame and is the youngest person to receive this high honor.

I've already found the first female Hispanic astronaut (see Jan 17th below), but did you know there's another airborne Ellen first?

Ellen Church was the world's first airline "stewardess". She was a nurse at the time and proposed the idea to United Airlines who accepted it. In 1930, "Sky Girls" was born. Ellen did much more than fluff pillows as this hometown Des Moine newspaper article explains.

Quite an interesting bit of history. I'm sure enjoying all of these Ellen finds and hope whoever stops by here, does too.

Small Town Ellen

As a kid, we spent some summers in the Catskills and at some point would end up in Ellenville. I remember feeling incredibly special being in a town bearing my name and always wondered who the Ellen was it was named after.

Ellenville was the home of many hotels and bungalow colonies where many of my relatives went to escape the heat of the summer. I didn't get it exactly, since it was pretty hot up there too. Guess it was more affordable than other places. Among the many hotels was the Nevele, which amazingly is still there. I was a spellling whiz in school and I remember feeling so clever when I figured out that Nevele is "eleven" spelled backwards. Here are some examples of Ellenville hotels in their heyday:

It was challenging and often dangerous, but Ellen MacArthur was determined to break the record for a solo sailing voyage around the globe. The daily updates were real life cliffhangers and so glad her hard work paid off!

When I lived in NYC, I passed by Ellen's Stardust Diner countless times, but never had a chance to stop in.

Even more interesting than the diner itself, was the fact that Ellen Hart was a former Miss Subways. This was a beauty contest held on the NYC subway from the 1940's to the 1970's. Scroll down the page to see a bunch of the former candidates.

Here's how it looked in the subway.

I wonder what the prize was. Probably something really girly, like a free perm or a handbag.

I live in Los Angeles, where show business is everywhere.

Just running out to buy a container of milk, I might see Tom Hanks or Jennifer Garner or Michelle Pfeiffer.
The dry cleaner has headshots of all of their famous customers. Even the DMV has headshots!!
Some restaurants actually close early on Oscar day and the streets are deserted. Either folks are actually at the ceremony or watching them, because they are connected in some way.

Just found this interesting blog, written by Ellen Gray, who is the entertainment columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News. The blog documents her impressions of the Television Critics Association's Winter meetings in Hollywood.

It's nice to read someone's honest opinion of this event, as opposed to the screaming, attack on your senses approach of "Entertainment Tonight" and all of its clones.

I love beauty products. Not so much makeup, since most of the time I just wear red lipstick. I love soaps and lotions, not only for the wonderful scents and combos of exotic ingredients, but for the packaging too.

Came across this British company called Original Source whose products I had never heard of, since they're not available here. This review explains the Ellen connection:

"Upon reading the back of the bottle; it provides a cute little history of the Original Source Range. The tale tells like this;
‘The Original Source range of shower products is inspired by the bush remedies of Ellen Wakeman. Years ago, it seemed like we all knew all of the astronaut's names and missions, but now there are so many it's hard to keep up. As a kid I was completely fascinated by the Solar System and had models and mobiles in my room. Not so much today, but the recent pictures of Saturn and the sunspots were pretty thrilling and brought back that old feeling again.

Ellen: Fact or Fiction?

At first I was just going to post about interesting Ellens around the world, until I remembered there are some excellent Ellens in books and movies, too.

It wasn't until years after I first saw "Alien" that I discovered Ripley's first name was Ellen. Now that was cool having such a kick-ass hero with my name.

There are tons of links discussing Ripley, but the most interesting thing I found was this book: Alien Woman: The Making of Lt. Ellen Ripley. Looks like a good read.

It's no coincidence that as a young girl, I loved Beverly Cleary's Ellen Tebbits. Aside from the obvious, I actually had nothing in common with the character, although I do love a slice of Tillamook cheddar now and then. Hahaha!

Record Breakin' Ellen

Looking around for Ellens, I found the amazing adventures of Ellen Macarthur over at:
Team Ellen.

The Team Ellen site is documenting Ellen's efforts to become the fastest person to sail single-handedly round the world. She's already five days ahead of the record and has 7500 more miles to go.

Now I'm hooked and can't wait to see if she does it.

Oh and of course, there's another opportunity for more Ellen stuff.

Evil Dead Ellen

The first time I saw "The Evil Dead", I became an instant Sam Raimi fan.
When I saw him walking down the street a few years ago, I really had to contain myself and not blurt out what a genius I think he is.

How funny that I found out that the role of "Cheryl", who was also the first character to turn into a zombie was played by Ellen Sandweiss.

I don't think fellow Ellen actors Barkin or Burstyn have had the pleasure of playing zombies, although Ms. Burstyn came pretty close in "Requiem for a Dream".
